Basketball Player Collapses, Dies at Elk Grove High School

A prep basketball player collapsed and died while playing basketball in a gym class at Elk Grove High School Friday morning.

The 18-year-old has been identified as Christopher Marshall. First school officials, and then paramedics attempted life-saving measures on the young man. He was rushed to Methodist Hospital but emergency personnel couldn't revive him.

According to a school website, Marshall had played basketball for four years. He hoped to attend a four-year university after junior college and study computer programming.

The school community is stunned by the sudden death of the popular student-athlete. "He was so nice," said student Elizabeth Elloie. "He associated with everybody. It wasn't like he was into one group, he liked to talk to everybody. He was friends with everyone. It hurt. Everybody was hurt."

School officials canceled a scheduled baseball game and student rally Friday. Grief counselors were on campus all day and will return to the school next week to help students cope with the tragedy.

It is not known if Marshall had a medical condition. An autopsy is pending to determine to cause the death.
