  • 13 Yr. old Middle School Student Dies At Football Practice

FYI: Ferguson is a suburb of St. Louis.

FERGUSON, MO (KTVI_FOX2now.com) - An 8th grade student at Berkeley Middle School collapsed and died during football practice Tuesday afternoon. The 13 year old boy was not on a school-sponsored team, but the practice was happening at McCluer South High School in Ferguson. Police Chief Tom Moonier says the boy finished doing sprints during practice, walked to the sidelines and was standing near his coach when he collapsed.

Several adults were at the practice. They raced to him, attempting to revive him. A police sergeant did CPR and Chief Moonier says the boy was breathing when he left McCluer South. However, a Ferguson Fire Department Battalion Chief says the boy died at a hospital.

FOX 2 News spoke with Anthony's uncle who told us he was an outstanding youngster, "He was beyond great he was beyond great you have good kids then you have so-so kids he was a good child everything about him was good totally respectful just everything about him was good."

Anthony's mother, whose birthday is Wednesday has donated her son's organs so they can help save others. His mother also recently lost her job, so the family plans to establish a fund so she can afford to bury her child.

A spokesperson for the Ferguson Florissant School District said late Tuesday night, administrators were in the process of notifying staff at Berkeley Middle School. Grief counselors will be on site Wednesday for students or teachers who need them.

"Every student is part of the Ferguson Florissant family. The loss of a child is a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family," the spokesman said.

Grief counselors will be at the school to help students cope with the grief from the tragic loss of Anthony
