What is HCM? HCM is the leading cause of sudden death in the young accounting for 40% of the deaths on the athletic playing field. HCM is rather common affecting 1 in 500 people in the USA, many of whom are unaware they have an undetected serious heart condition. HCM is a genetic disease that causes the heart muscle to become thickened and can impair its ability to function properly. Symptoms may include fainting, nearly fainting, shortness of breath, chest pain/pressure, palpitation and fatigue and in some cases the first “symptom” is sudden death. HCM presents with a heart murmur only in 40-50% of cases. Many people with HCM live though many misdiagnosis including asthma, depression and panic attacks. For more information visit www.4hcm.org

Who was Vickie Keller? She was born in 1955 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Lewis and Violet Ware. She graduated from Cape Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University. She married Ronald Keller in 1975. She had three children, Carlen, Amber, and Jared. Vickie was a merchandiser with Kraft foods. Vickie was an avid runner. In mid-summer of 1999, at the age of 44, Vickie was in Festus, Missouri to cheer her husband and Carlen on in a 10K run. She was in the midst of talking to a friend and fellow runner, when all of a sudden she dropped to the ground. Paramedics soon arrived and she was rushed to the local hospital. After being shocked several times she finally regained a steady pulse. However she was still in a coma. After about a week we made the decision to transfer Mom to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape. There was significant brain damage and the family made the decision to take her off life support. Mom died a few days later from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).
Later her children were screened and it was found that Amber had HCM; she now has an implantable defibrillator to protect her from sudden death.
