A 13-year-old boy died Wednesday after clutching his chest and collapsing to the
ground while playing basketball at a West Valley middle school.
Alejandro Quiroz, who had turned 13 last Friday, was not known to have a prior
medical condition. An autopsy will be performed within the next few days to
determine the cause of his death.
Several students witnessed the incident, which occurred at lunchtime at Marc T.
Atkinson Middle School in Maryvale.
School officials performed CPR on the 7th-grader as paramedics rushed to the
scene, but he was pronounced dead a short while later at Maryvale Samaritan
Hospital, Phoenix fire officials said.
Within two hours, a team of school psychologists visited the school to talk to
students, many who were left shocked by their peer's sudden death.
"It was a very emotional afternoon for the staff and the students, even the
students who did not know him personally," said Meri Simmons, director of
community relations for the Cartwright School District.
All afternoon activities were cancelled as children were sent home with a letter
to informing parents of the incident. Counselors will continue talking to
students Thursday as the school tries to recover from the incident.
"The staff and the students are going to help each other deal with this
tragedy," Simmons said. "They really pulled together as a family this
afternoon."
