Re: Another young death
God Bless Alejandro Quiroz. Regardless of cause of death HCM or otherwise these tragic events are almost to sad for words.
Many of you have lost family members to HCM, some children, some adults. These events bring back the pain, fear and anger that these deaths brought to our own families.
We work hard here at the HCMA in hopes that no family will have to endure these losses in the future. WE beg for better screenings of our children, more AED's in our schools and more general knowledge that CHILDREN HAVE HEART DISEASE!
May Alejandro Quiroz rest in peace an know that his death has not gone unnoticed in the world.
Out thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Lisa Salberg

Re: Another young death
Here is the story, but the question is... Is this detectible? I was told arteries were too small to show on an echo, so would an EKG show an abnormality here? Or only in the minutes preceding the incident?
Thank you to anyone who has the answers.

Student Died From Heart Defect
04-18-2003 03:40:AM
(Phoenix, AZ) -- Doctors say a heart defect caused a seventh grader to suddenly collapse and die while playing basketball on Wednesday. Alejandro Quiroz's (Cure-ohs) exact cause of death was a congenital coronary artery anomaly which is a twist or kink in the artery causing blood flow to stop. The 13-year-old was on the court during recess at Atkinson Middle School in Maryvale. According to his family, they did not know the boy had any medical problems.

Re: Another young death
On the news today, the findings of Alejandro's autopsy showed a "kink" in his artery that stopped blood flow to his heart. They stated the cause as congenital cardiovascular disease. Although not HCM, his death was sudden and his life short.
I continue to send good thoughts and prayers to Alejandro and his family. God Bless each of them in their time of mourning.
God Bless HCMA for being here for all of you and for everyone fighting the fight of this and many other heart conditions.
Love,
Sharon

Boy, 13, dies on Maryvale playground

A 13-year-old boy died Wednesday after clutching his chest and collapsing to the
ground while playing basketball at a West Valley middle school.
Alejandro Quiroz, who had turned 13 last Friday, was not known to have a prior
medical condition. An autopsy will be performed within the next few days to
determine the cause of his death.
Several students witnessed the incident, which occurred at lunchtime at Marc T.
Atkinson Middle School in Maryvale.
School officials performed CPR on the 7th-grader as paramedics rushed to the
scene, but he was pronounced dead a short while later at Maryvale Samaritan
Hospital, Phoenix fire officials said.
Within two hours, a team of school psychologists visited the school to talk to
students, many who were left shocked by their peer's sudden death.
"It was a very emotional afternoon for the staff and the students, even the
students who did not know him personally," said Meri Simmons, director of
community relations for the Cartwright School District.
All afternoon activities were cancelled as children were sent home with a letter
to informing parents of the incident. Counselors will continue talking to
students Thursday as the school tries to recover from the incident.
"The staff and the students are going to help each other deal with this
tragedy," Simmons said. "They really pulled together as a family this
afternoon."
