One day I was driving on a dirt road in the country. I was doing about ten miles an hour when I looked out the window and noticed a chicken on the side of the road keeping pace with me. Something didn’t look right, and on closer scrutiny I noticed that the bird had four legs.
I was amazed by both the four legs, and the fact that this bird could keep pace with my car. I decided to see just how fast this chicken could run. I increased my speed to fifteen miles per hour, and sure enough, the bird was still keeping pace. Twenty, then twenty-five, then thirty, and the bird was still there. At thirty-five miles per hour the chicken suddenly made a left turn and ran into a farmyard.
I stopped the car, got out, and approached the farmer. I told him about the fantastic speed of the bird, and the fact that it had four legs. He knew all about it, and explained that he had noticed that most people liked drumsticks, so he had developed a four legged chicken to meet the demand, in the hope that he could “corner the market.”
I said that was a fantastic idea, then asked what the bird tasted like. His answer, “Don’t know – never been able to catch one.”
