  • Pilates?

Is Pilates okay to do with HCM? I am sure Dr. Ommen will tell me what I can and cannot do, but that isn't until October. I have given up jogging and am now walking fast, trying to keep my heartrate below 125- which isn't easy but it is doable. No doctor has told me to not get my heartrate above 125, but just from reading on this board, I figure it is safest to not let it get too high.

What about doing Pilates with a stretchy band- does anyone know what specialists think about Pilates and HCM?

    Re: Pilates?

I think that Pilates is fine. If you haven't already, you should watch the session from the 2008 annual meeting given by Dr. Sharlene Day on exercise with HCM. The basic rule is that as long as you can carry on a conversation while you are exercising, it is ok. With weightbearing exercise, you don't want to strain. Weight machines at light settings with multiple repetitions are fine, so I am sure that if you do pilates, as long as you don't strain yourself and bear down you will be ok.

Thanks! I checked out the speech she gave and it was very informative. I think attending the next HCMA conference would be great for me to learn more about HCM- unfortunately we can't afford that, but it seems there is a wealth of information there. I know Dr. Ommen will be a huge help in October though as well!

If you watch all of the presentations online, it is almost the same as being there, and costs nothing.

Yep, I plan on doing that when I have a spare moment away from my kiddos and can focus.
