  • VACATION Woo Hoo!

I had a pity-party for myself last week because I am having such a hard time finding a good doctor. I have calmed down now and know that with a little more work on my part, I will be able to work it out. Living with this condition day in and day out will sometimes get the best of me. Sometimes, I just need to step back and take a break from trying to live and go live life.

In June of last year, we finally convinced my mom to leave the nursing home in Virginia and move in with us in FL (she has HCM and had had a stroke over a year before). My husband is her primary caregiver and rehabilitationist. He is also a stay-at-home dad to our kids. A month after we moved Mom in, I went into heart failure and had a myectomy and valve surgery a month later. Recovery was hard on all of us at times, especially with him having to deal with two people that were “down”. Through all of this, he has been the fabric that keeps our family together and the machine that keeps it running. He loves fishing but, even though we live in FL and there is water everywhere, he seldom gets to go.

Finally, I can give back to him some of what he showed me. We are leaving tomorrow (tonight if he has his way) for a trip to the FL Keys! A day in the middle keys, a few in Key West and then back to the upper keys for a day. I cannot think of a man that deserves it more. We have not had a vacation in a long, long time. Mom has rehabilitated so much that we just have a home-health nurse coming in for a few hours each day and my husband’s parents are going to watch the kids while we are away. Today (yes April Fool’s Day) is our 11th anniversary and I am so looking forward to the week and the years we have ahead.

I hope everyone gets an opportunity to take some time for themselves this year and enjoy the time we have.
