There is no direct evidence regarding this drug in patients with HCM. Nevertheless, it is the conservative (and prudent) position of the HCMA that marijuana should be avoided. Recent data in normal individuals shows that there is a 4-fold increase of a myocardial infarction (heart attack) after ingestion of marijuana. In addition, this drug increases the rate and the force of the contractions of the heart. This could place a substantial burden on the HCM heart, especially over long-term use.

back in college, i was around people who did a lot of pot and even if i was just in the room with them (granted there was a towel jammed under the door), i would get really bad tachycardia. once i stuck my head out the window so i could get some real air. (we don't need to go into details as to why i wasn't just leaving the room immediately, let's just chalk it up to being 18 and kinda dumb.)

anyway, all the tachycardia and palpitations were enough to prove to me that it would not be safe for me to have a relationship with pot in any way.
