  • My condition is making me depressed? :(

Hi guys I'm new to the forum, here's a short summary of my story..

I was diagnosed with HCM at the age of 6 shortly after it was found in my family. It never meant anything to me, I was too young to understand. My symptoms started at the age of 11 - breathlessness. Throughout my teen years my condition deteriorated, medicines were constantly increased (I'm now on high doses of bisoprolol, verapamil and disopyramide which only control it to an extent).

I'm 18 years old. I wake up every morning unable to stand until I've taken my tablets and they've kicked in. Some days I can't stand for longer than 5 minutes all day. I can't walk far without getting out of breath, and I can't keep up with any of my friends . Chest pain is normal for me.
My doctors have said I shouldn't work, I had to pull out of college because it was too tiring for me. (There goes my dream of becoming a vet) I can't tolerate stairs.. And on top of this I have barely any family support. I'm a mess! I've changed my diet and lifestyle and I don't feel any better.

My heart specialists say my only option is a heart transplant (which I'm soon to be evaluated for), my heart is not thick in the right places to benefit from a myectomy or alcohol septal ablation.
I'm just upset no one else really understands.

    ICD Implant in 2011
    Evaluation for Transplant in process.

Re: My condition is making me depressed?

    Hi and Welcome.

So sorry it was necessary for you to find us but everyone here absolutely understands and will give you all support you need and then some. We have all done our share of ranting, raving, crying and everything else you can think of - it is only natural when you are diagnosed with a chronic life-changing condition no matter what your age.

If it is a transplant that you need so that you may realize your dream of continuing your education and becoming a vet then that is what is going to happen, just a little later than you planned. You are very young with a long life ahead of you and am sure you will make the most of it.

Please keep us updated and let us know how you are doing.

I am so sorry that you are having such struggles. First of all welcome to our site. One suggestion would be to contact our HCMA office and tell them where you are being seen and a little more history. If a transplant is indeed in your future, you are young and will be so glad you did it. We have a couple of teens on our site that have had them and I know they would be glad to share their experience. I received a new heart at age 57 and have done great. It gave me my life back. Again welcome and we are here for you.
