  • HCMA and Sauna?

    Hello everyone,
It has been a while since I have posted here mostly because I've just been busy with school and finals, but I recently got out for summer. I was looking for something to do this summer and I found this class that is called Hot Yoga (which is like doing regular yoga but in a sauna type room). I was wondering if it was ok for someone with HCM to go into a sauna? Has anyone with HCM ever been in a sauna and if so what were your experiences?
Thanks for taking the time to read my question, and best of wishes to everybody.

P.S. In the question I meant to write HCM and Sauna. Sorry for that mistake

    Re: HCM and Sauna?

I think that in general saunas aren't a good idea for someone with HCM. You are more prone to dehydration issues than those without heart disease and since you'll be sweating like crazy during the sessions you might have more problems than a healthy person. Also, I believe many people with HCM are much more prone to symptoms during hot, humid weather.

I feel very confident that if you asked your cardiologist about this (and you should) he/she would not recommend this at all. There are plenty of other things to do that do not involve placing additional stress on your heart such as dehydration.

I totally agree with Linda and Reenie, dehydration could easily become an issue.

          Re: HCM and Sauna?

My cardiologist added this: He said that he thought that for people with severely weakened hearts (as with more typical heart issues), sometimes the stimulation of a sauna could be a good thing within reason. But for people with HCM whose hearts were already working too hard, the extra stress of the sauna was not something he would recommend. (This was in response to my telling him about having chest pain for some hours after being in a sauna.)
