  • Does God Answer Prayers?

I was just recently diagnosed with HCM, and naturally have been doing a lot of reflecting on my life lately. I gave a talk over this past weekend to a retreat group, and I recounted a story about how hard I used to pray that I would make the basketball team in high school. I am 6'2", but not very coordinated; however, I tried very hard and practiced a lot. But I never did make the team. I think now I know why! If God had answered my prayers the way I wanted them answered 36 years ago and I had made the team, chances are (my doctor says) that I would not be here today.
I now know that God did answer my prayers, I just didn't understand how back then. I know that God does answer all prayers, it is just that sometimes we don't understand the answer at the time...Or maybe we will never understand while we are here on this earth.
We try to make sense out of life and its meaning the only way we know how...by our human words and emotions. However, God's ways are many times beyond our human understanding...

    Jim,

Your post touched me. You are so right, we don't always understand the answers we get when we pray. That doesn't mean we don't get answers. Thank you for the heart felt reminder.

Jim, sometimes not getting what you ask for is the best solution in the long run.
Every great thing that has ever happened since the beginning of time has started as a single thought in someones mind.
So if you are capable of thought then you are capable of great things
        Good luck and stay well.

My daughter just sent me an e mail that said "Keep praying but be thankful that God's answers are wiser than your prayers."

That was a wonderful post. I've had many experiences that I can look back on now and say "so that's why that happened or that's why that person came into my life". Nothing ever happens that wasn't meant to happen no matter what you think you could have done differently to change the outcome.

              Re: Does God Answer Prayers?

              Dear Jim,
You are right! God does answer all prayers, even though it is not always in the way we expect it. He has shown our family that so many times!
My six year old daughter Anna has HCM - yes, it has changed our life in ways that we never imagined but more importantly it has changed our outlook and attitude towards life. God is teaching me so many valuable lessons through my daughters condition. One lesson he is teaching me is to 'worry less'. It is so hard sometimes. Each day I consciously try and hand over all my worries to God - it is not easy as I want to be 'in control'! God reminds me that He is the one in control! God always sees the 'bigger picture'. We have to trust in Him and remember that 'God is Love'.
My daughter asked me the other night "Mummy, how long do I have to keep taking these tablets?" When I explained that she would always need to take them to help her heart she replied " But I won't have to take them when I am in heaven because my heart will be better in heaven!". Through my daughter God teaches me other important lessons - this time to keep seeing the positive in everything. Sometimes we might not understand what the lessons are but one day we will. That is a comforting thought.
              Keep trusting in God,

Sometimes kids understand the big picture better then the "grown ups"

Give her a big hug for me - what a sweet heart!
