  • anybody exercise with hcm?

hi group. do any of you exercise regulary whilst living with hcm/hocm. i have had a few tests done to rule out hocm as i was having some scary symptoms while exercising. ive been told its ruled out now due to the clean results ive had, however i stumble across a late onset case every now and again and panic myself. if i did develop it at a later stage, could i continue my intense boxing training lifestyle?

The general recommendation from the experts is that HCM patients should definitely exercise regularly. But I think they'd unanimously tell you that an intense boxing training lifestyle is a very bad idea. We need exercise that doesn't involve fast stops and starts, doesn't involve big strains, and that you can get out of when you need to.

Talk to your HCM specialist. You do see one, I hope?

My son also has HCM currently 26 but at diagnosis he was told not to participate in any sports that might cause sudden trauma to his chest.

        Igrass94,

As Gordon suggested, find a specialist in HCM.

There are HCM Centers of Excellence (COE) that can perform exercise stress echo-cardiograms. I have had several.
One was performed by a cardiologist who first diagnosed my HCM but was not a specialist in HCM. I was skeptical at first because I had a very strange coarse of events that led up to my diagnoses. I had seen literally five different cardiologists before I went to a COE and had one last exercise echo-cardiogram. Four of the first cardiologists that I saw were not familiar with HCM and did not understand what it was. All of the back and forth and confusion caused me to be skeptical. I still have some skepticism as the knowledge of this disease is still unfolding but you are in a good place with the HCMA !
