  • Over did it

Well, I was having a great day yesterday, no issues, felt good. I Went to the gym last night (I was into bench press competitions before i was diagnosed) and am still a gym rat. I try not to over do it, but I did. I woke up through out the night, had heartburn like pain, I had to force myself to get up in the morning and go to work. I felt very tired, weak and dizzy off and on all day.

Do any of you feel like this if you do too much? I have had this happen also when I helped someone move, when I tried to do more cardio than weight train and if I have to go up and down stairs a few times. Sorry for the long post.

    Lil Mac:

Yes this happens when I overdo it. We just have to try and remind ourselves we're built a little different. This being your first post you might want to go introduce yourself at the "Hello, My name is..." section on these boards. By the way are you recently HCM diagnosed? Are you on medication? Have you had any surgery for your HCM? Important to know in responding to questions like you have here. Whatever your status though, welcome to the HCMA boards and wish you well in your HCM journey.

      Re: Over did it

      Hi Lil Mac,
Welcome to the board. I'll echo Moosedreams' questions, and add one: have you seen an HCM specialist, or has all of your diagnosis and treatment been from your local cardiologist?

Anyone can overdo exercise and feel overtired, washed out, and weak as a result. The chest pain, though, isn't something just anyone would have as a result of too much exercise. I think you'd do really well to (a) take it easy on the exercise -- I don't mean eliminate it, I mean stop long before you think you've had enough, and (b) see a specialist. Among other things, they can discuss exercise regimens with you.

As an ex gym rat - its not easy to adapt, but you have to! Chest pain is not something to ignore, or "work though." Its important to listen to your body and act accordingly. Not know anything about you it could be anything - including circulatory issues NOT related to HCM. Do see an expert.

Thank you very much for all of your posts. I have been trying to cut back the lifting but it is hard, for me anyway there is just something about lifting heavy weight, and I have a very good shot at the world record bench press in my catagory this spring if i compete. i'm fighting that right now, trying not go there. I'm currently being seen at the Stanford Medical Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease. I'm not on any meds.
One last question, for now anyway haha, do any of you have the heartburn like pain at night, or anytime. I thought it might be from eating, but it happens random could be anytime of day or night. Thanks again!

              Re: Over did it

I'm not sure whether your pain is from something like heartburn, or is the chest pain that many people with HCM have. I think you should get it checked out.

                  Re: Over did it

My own doctors orders were to continue lifting, but NEVER to the point of having to really strain, grunt, hold breath. It seems to me that in order to lift anything substantial, you'd have to do all three! Skip the world record - Living is better.

                    Re: Over did it

This is just an observation, definitely not advice. I worked through chest pain, shortness of breath, near blackouts, and occasional total blackouts for most of my life. I was not diagnosed with HCM until I was 55. Until I was 35, i worked on the farm and in heavy construction. After a heavy day, the next day often felt like I was walking through wet cement. I thought these symptoms were normal, something that everyone experienced. I was the first in my family to be diagnosed, but looking back, I suspect that both my father and grandfather had HCM, I think they dealt with the same symptoms I did, but dealing with the symptoms was just something they did. I think I was so oblivious to the symptoms because they had them also.

Here's the punch line: my father lived to 93. He died when 3 old friends died and he decided to quit eating. My grandfather did not live as long, but he died of cancer, not heart problems.

This is an anecdote, not anything to stake your life on. But at least some HCMers are not fragile. All that being said, I don't lift weights and I take it very easy on hills when I ride my bike.

When talking with HCM'r it becomes clear that we all grew up and accept how we feel as "normal". Its not until we seek medical help that we realize (Insert lightbulb above my head) thats not the case!

The amount of weight is all relative. 50 lbs to you is probably a lot more stress on your body than 50 lbs to me, and I'm guessing the OP, Lil Mac. I'm 6'3" tall, 236 lbs, and have been lifting since I was in high school (I'm 43 now). Now, I have cut back on the weight and increase the reps. Additionally, at the recommendation of Dr. Owen @ UW Medicine (a COE) I use the machines rather than free weights so I don't have any weights over my head or body in the event I do pass out. I also wear my heart rate monitor when I'm lifting and doing cardio exercise. Dr. Owen suggested a heart rate limit of 130 for me.

As mentioned by others, make sure you are breathing properly and not straining yourself.

Hi, my name is Rachel and I was first diagnosed with HCM in 2005. I've had all the symptons on and off throughout those years but just in the last 6 months or so they've been getting worse and I've been scheduled to get an ICD on December 28. I also notice that if I overdo it, I "pay" for it the next day by feeling fatiqued, weak, breakthless, sick to the stomach and sometimes heartburn. It never occured to me that the heartburn may be chest pain. How do I know if it's simply heartburn or if it is in fact chest pain? Does anyone else feel sick to the stomach if they overdo it?
