    [Hi]

    Author: Lori (---.dialsprint.net)

Hey guys, I wrote in a couple weeks ago from Cedar Rapids.

I had an episode that concerned me.

The other morning I woke to a sharp pain in my chest and was unable to move or talk. I am not sure how long this lasted. When I was able to move and then talk I noticed the butterfly feeling in my heart and was short of breath. I thought my ICD unit kicked me.

I did go to the doctor and the nurse said the ICD hadn't gone off and talked to the cardiologist. He ordered an EKG and said everything looked fine.

Well, it sure scared me and off course I was dead tired for the rest of the day. I have never had pain before just the shortness of breath, butterflies in my heart and shortness of breath.

I notice just going up the stairs in my home sometimes causes the symptoms and and I am so tired after. The symptoms usually only last a half an hour tops.

Also, I have been unsuccessful in contacting you as I get the answering machine and you were unable to reach me. Is there another way to contact for the book, membership and HCM Specialists near me?

    Dear Lori,

I'm very concerned about this episode since it sounds exactly like you had a transitory ischemic attack (TIA) (mini-stroke). However, they usually happen when you are having an arrhythmia. You absolutely need to be seen by a specialist asap. I would also ask your doctor if you can start taking an aspirin a day right now, just as insurance. If you get visual disturbances or a piercing headache, those are also symptoms of a stroke. If anything like this happens again, you need to get to an ER asap, just to be safe.

Please go to the membership link at the top of this page and you can mail in your check for memberhip to get you started. To talk to Lisa about doctors, please call again and leave your full name, phone number, address, and a good time to call and she will call you as soon as she can. She is stretched pretty thin, but she does get to everyone.

I had a TIA myself, so I know how you feel and it is a very scary thing. I'm disappointed that your doctor is not pursuing the cause of this because unless this is addressed, it could happen again. I'm sorry to scare you, but strokes are no joke.

    hang in there,

    Sarah

    Thanx ladies for the info.

Lisa, unfortunately I didn't check the site again until 8 my time (CST). You are on EST right?

I will try again tomorrow. All of the things I've read on this site have enlightened me to say the least.

My girls had their sonograms(?). Pictures of their hearts using sound. We are waiting the results.

I can't wait to talk to you.

I don't know what my gradient and stuff are and also don't know the thickness of that muscle because I keep forgetting to ask.

I would like to know exactly which questions/tests to ask for.

I would hope if these docs want to learn about hcm they will be willing to listen. If not, their are lots of cardiologists to go through here that could keep in touch with the specialist once I see one.

I hope I can find one that will do this.

I don't understand why doctors have to have a know it all attitude.

Do they think we don't know they are human?

    Dear Lori

Not all doctors are like this, it just takes a few tries (sometimes many tries) to find one who knows that they are human, too.

As for copies of the echocardiograms on you and your kids to be sent to you. You can read how to read an echo in an earlier post on this board and talk to lisa about the results.

The ecg and an echo are the two tests you all need for preliminary screening. If anything is out of the ordinary, they may do a stress test, too. Then you work up a treatment plan if need be.

good luck and keep us posted,

    Sarah
