[Neck Pain & ICD's]

I am wondering if anyone else out there has been dealing with neck pain, ie., stiff neck, achy collarbone, and upper-back stiffness on the upper left side.

I got my ICD in February. I never had any neck problems before this, but then in May, I woke up with a severely stiff neck. I mean, I walked around w/ my head cocked to the right for at least three days. Couldn't turn my head, couldn't look up, down, anything. Then the stiffness gradually got better, but my neck has never been quite right since then. Bending my head all the way to the back is impossible. And ever since May, I have had continued stiffness on the left side of my neck. I have had 2 episodes since May, when I woke up with extreme stiffness in my neck. Most recently, this week. Again, I am turning my entire body just to look left. I am getting so frustrated w/this.

I asked my cardiologist about this and he poo-pooed the whole thing as having anything to do w/my ICD.

By the way, while I was recovering from my surgery, I had lots of pain and discomfort around my shoulder blade and the left side of my neck. This pain is located in the same place. I am beginning to wonder if my ICD leads are resting on a nerve or something.

Also, my mother had HCM. She had neck problems continually until the day she passed away. She passed away last year, Oct. 19, from complications from a heart transplant. All of the sudden, she would wake up w/ a severely stiff neck, and be nearly disabled from it. She began sleeping w/ just a towel rolled up under her neck, and no pillow to try to ease the pain.

This makes me wonder about neck pain relating to just having HCM. Perhaps having an ICD has little to do w/it? She didn't have an ICD, but did have a pacemaker.

Anyway, I am getting frustrated and feeling like an old woman more and more. I am only 38!

If you are dealing w/this, please respond, so maybe I can relate this to my Dr.

Dear Debbie,

May I ask who did your ICD placement? I'm never happy to hear that anyone gets poo-poohed about anything. I've read a lot of ICD posts and people do say they have soreness and a hard time sleeping. You do have wires and a box in your chest and they can cause problems. I think you need to press your doctor for some answers or talk to Lisa about finding a specialist. I'm assuming you are not seeing someone from the "big 5."

feel better,

I got my ICD at University of Colorado Hospital in Denver. Unfortunately, off hand, I don't recall the surgeon's name, but I can find out, if that's what you want to know.

The one who pooh-poohed me was my cardiologist in Colorado Springs. As far as I understand, there are no HCM specialists in C.S. I haven't personally spoken w/Lisa, but my sister did.

I would tend to doubt that the pain is related to the ICD - maybe directly after implant, but not months later. Please note that "CHEST PAIN" in women is not located in the "chest" it can be in the neck, upper arm, mid back or even the jaw. Talk to your doctor - -tell him/her your symptoms, do not be too quick to assume what they are coming from, let the doctor evaluate the entire situation.

Best wishes!
