[the importance of seeing a specialist]

    Author: Mary (---.wi.rr.com)

Last week I went to see my new hcm specialist for the second time. This time around he'd finally gotten ahold of my records and was able to review them. And from this visit I found out some information I wish I had had years ago. First of all, I suffer from a very mild form of hcm, which means that the symptoms I've been having, while possibly due to hcm, are most likely due to something else. This doctor has ordered a cardiac cath, the first I've had in 7 years of being diagnosed with the disease.

The cath is to see if I possibly have coronary artery disease, and if so to go on from there. Wouldn't it have been nice to have known this a few years ago, when I first became symptomatic?Until recently (May 2001, when one cardiologist ordered a thalium stress test) not a single doctor did anything besides echos, ekgs, and meds. Not one of them gave me any concrete information. I'm not angry, just frustrated at knowing that something more aggressive could have been done years ago. I recommend that everybody with hcm follow Lisa's advice, get to a specialist, and find out what your options are.
