[Bad Sinues/Allergies worsen HCM symptoms]

Hello!
Just wondering if anyone else suffers from sinus and allergy problems?
I get them so badly that I find it almost impossible to function during the day, let alone get out of bed! It really wears me down, to the point where I'm too weak to do anything. Even just sitting or laying down I'm out of breath and my heart is racing. It's normal for me to have days where my energy is low, but when my sinuses act up I have NO energy and CAN'T do anything!
In the past (before I knew I had HCM), I tried MANY different meds (over the counter & prescription), but they only made me feel worse (heart wise) After being diagnosed (about a year ago) I realized why all the sinus meds were only working agains't me.
I have an appointment w/ my doctor, but not for another two weeks. So I was wondering if anyone could recommend something that would help?
Thanks so much,
Brie Rodighiero

My father has bad sinus/ allergy problems ... migraines, too! He takes OTC meds for symptom relief. I better check to see what kind(s) he is taking (ie. bedtime or non-drowsy!)

Thanks so much for your responses!
I called my doctors office and spoke to a nurse about OTC meds and she told me there are only a few that don't have erphrin (Spelling???) in them and those were the only ones I could take. One that she highly recommended is Coricidin HBP, it's for people with high blood presure. But I have very low blood presure!
Well, I'll give it a try anyhow and let you know how it goes!
Thanks again,
Brie

Dear Brie,
What she means is that if you have high blood pressure, you are taking a beta-blocker (or something similar) and therefore can't take the same OTC meds that HCMers can't take, too.
DO NOT take anything with ephedrine, epinephrene or says "non-drowsy" formula. They are stimulants and can cause lots of heart problems. Take benadryl regular or any other antihistamine like Claritin regular (not "D"). I'm not familiar with Coricidin, but the nurse should know what she is talking about. Also avoid caffiene. Drink decaf black tea for the natural decongestant in it.
Personally, I find a HUGE amount of relief from this little doohicky: http://www.healthandyoga.com/html/product/neti.html
It sounds gross and I swore I'd never do it, but it works like a charm. I have a friend who would get sinus infections every few months. She now uses this every day and she doesn't get sick anymore, or very, very rarely. Also, steam will losen any gunk that gets into your lungs.
take care
Sarah

Thanks Sarah.....although it does look pretty weird I'm giving it a try. I'll let you know what I think of it.
I have taken the Coricidin and it helped a little. It didn't bother my heart, so that's good! But I still need more relief so I'm on to the Neti Pot!
Take care,
Brie

Dear Brie
A couple tips on the neti: 1 test the water temp and make sure it itsn't too hot or too cold, 2. evacuate really well but not super hard --longer and softer is better than short and hard (hhmm, that doesn't sound right), 3. Kosher salt works well, 4. The first couple times are usually yucky till you get the hang of it--here is where "try, try again" is important. And it is _not_ addicting like nasal spray.
You can e-mail me, too.
take care,
Sarah
