[Statin (cholesterol lowering) Drugs & HCM Reversal]

Recent clinical animal studies* using Simvastatin (Zocor) have shown reversal of Cardiac Hypertrophy and accompanying Fibrosis!. Human trials remain to be done, but the currative possibilities of the widely used cholesterol-lowering statins for HCM are very exciting!. As we all know, most current therapies are directed primarily at symptom relief rather than prevention or reversal of this incidious disease.

Certainly there are many HCM sufferers who are currently being treated with a statin drug (Zocor, Mevacor, Lipitor, etc) for high cholesterol. I am very interested, as I'm sure others are too, in hearing from anyone in this category regarding any changes they've experienced in their HCM status (symptoms, echo findings, etc) during the period of statin usage. I am not myself being treated with a statin but am a potential candidate, based on somewhat elevated cholesterol. Reply postings on this board would be fine, as well as personal e-mails ([email protected]).

I have been on Zocor for about 1 1/2 yrs. I haven't noticed any improvement in symptoms. Also there has been no mention of improvement on echo, the latest one done in June of this yr. I certainly hope that there is a possibility of this, as my 18 year old son also has HCM treated only w/ beta blockers at this time.
