    [HCM]

I am 41 years old I was diagnosed with hcm about 7 years ago. I was discovered I was having vtach and I had and ICD implanted about 2 years ago. It has not shocked me yet but they tell me the pacemaker is working overtime. I am starting to be a little short of breath lately and my ankles start to swell when I am on my feet all day, is this a sign of the progression of the hcm, and is there anything else I should be aware of ?

    Dear Barbara,

It sounds like the beginnings of congestive heart failure, which sounds worse than it is. Are you seeing a specialist so they can adjust the pacemaker and/or your medications so you are feeling better and your heart is working better? It sounds like it would be time to do that.

The HCMA can help you find a specialist if you don't have one yet.

    take care,

    Sarah

    Hi Sarah,

I kind of thought that was the problem but it has just started to be this way every now and then. I do have a cardiologist and I am due to go to him in Oct. Is there such a thing as a hcm specialist? I live in N.C.

    Take care,

    Barb

If you call the HCMA office at 973-983-7429 and speak to Lisa, she can let you know of specialists in your area. Also, if you are not already on the mailing list, please send us your name and mailing address so we can send you out some information.

    Dear Barbara,

I'll send your info, but Ellen meant that you should use e-mail and not post to the board. There is an e-mail link at the top of the page.
