I know that IHSS is another term for HCM, but does it mean it's HMC with obstruction?

    Dear Amy,

No, IHSS doesn't mean HOCM --it is just an old-fashioned term was before they knew it was a genetic disorder --the "I" stands for idiopathic (unknown origin).

    I - idiopathic

    H - hypertrophic

    S - subaortic

    S - stenosis

    Idiopathic - unknown origin

    Hypertrophic - thickened

    Subaortic - below the aorta

Stenosis - an abnormal constriction or narrowing of a duct, passage, or opening in the body

    Hope this answers your question.

    Good answer girls!!!!

Remember only 25-30% of those with HCM have obstruction.
