    [Low Blood Pressure]

    Author: Amanda Hall (---.dsl.dytnoh.ameritech.net)

    Date: 09-11-02 19:04

Today i went out with my family to do a little shopping. we came home and i started getting a headache and feeling really bad. i emptyed the dishwasher and start feeling worse, so i took my blood pressure to see what it was and it was 97over 50. my doctor had said that when i had my stress test that my blood pressure dropped instead of increased so he uped my medicine to 200mg a day. but now i feel really bad when my blood pressure drops and it happens one to three times a week. should i mention this to the doctor? does this mean my medicine is not working?

    sincerely,

    amanda

    Dear Amanda,

What medicine is it that you are on?

Yes, you should call your doctor and find out what else you can do. Be sure to drink a lot of fluids, too.

    take care,

    S

    Dear Amanda

Beta blockers lower your blood pressure usually. Ask the doctor if you can split the dose and talk half in the morning and half at night --this should help. and drink more fluids.

As to the medicine i have been on it for about a month now it should have done this before. it did lower it to like around 115/65 but lately it goes alot lower. i do take it twice a day. yes i have seen a HCM specialist...i have seen doctor lever which i called him today because my blood pressure keeps going up and down between normal and low. i just checked it again and it is 83/54. i am getting really bad headaches. the reason doctor lever put me on toprol-xl is because on my stress test when i excercised my blood pressure lowered and instead of raising like it should. i am drinking drinking drinking. that is all i do. i have been getting light headed with this problem, which worries me because for 12 hours i am alone with my 2 year old. hubby works. dr lever should call me back tomorrow. we will see what he has to say to all this.

    Amanda,

Good luck tomorrow. You are working with one of the best docs so I know you'll get this fixed soon. You might have to find a different medicine that's better for you. Everyone's a little different... and yes, tell him absolutely everything you are feeling.

    Take care, Matt

I'm on Verapamil and Atenolol but I have to space them out morning and night or my blood pressure goes in the toilet. I've also found that it helps to eat something high in protein (cheese, peanut butter) BEFORE I take my meds, and as everyone has already said - drink lots. I'm thinking of buying stock in Gatorade and Lipton Raspberry Tea....

Hydration is key... you may also want to add more salt to your diet. Talk to Lever about your meds and stay well hydrated...

    Good luck....and stay well!
