    [Another one....]

    Dear Everyone,

Today's Chicago Tribune reported that Marek Samitowski, 17, a senior at Lincoln Park HIgh School in the city, collapsed and died at karate class on Friday. The preliminary autopsy is inconclusive. He had no known health issues. However, earlier on Friday he said he felt "a bit weak."

I'll keep an eye out for any more news about the cause of death.

I know our hearts go out to the family.

    Sarah

Heard of another high school football player on the radio this morn...think it was in Detroit. Said he'd made TD and collapsed. Again no known history but the announcer did indicate it may have been a rare heart condition.

he was 15 years old. Was in on a tackle and came off the line. they said, after an autopsy that he had chronic heart failure. There were no known signs

Last week a 17 year old girl collapsed and died in the hallway of her school. She does play basketball(but was not playing at the time) She never showed any symptoms. We live in a small town, this has really shaken up alot of people. The autopsy report said that she died of an undiagnosed heart condition. My husband has hocm so this was just too close to home.

    Take care, Debbie

Locally (ND or MN) a 23 yr old man was running in a race (marathon, maybe). He collapsed 1 mile from the finnish line & died shortly thereafter of heart failure. Drs said he most likely had a congenital heart condition. The man had been a runner throughout his high school and college careers.

These stories are far more common then you all may think... that is why our work is so important!

Lets not let these people who have pasted away too early down...lets all work hard to help the rest of those undetected people..let them have a chance at LIFE.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts...

    Debbie,

Can you provide more specific information on the death of the 17 year old female basketball player?

I was able to find news stories (for the registry) on all of the above incidents except for this one.

some of the following info would be helpful:

    Name

    City - State

Online link to newspaper article, etc

    Thank you.

And thanks to all who post this information from around the country. I truly believe that one of the most influential ways that we can convince those outside our realm, of the frequency of these tragedies is by providing facts and figures.

    Allen
