Dear Nancy,
Please call the HCMA at 973-983-7429. Lisa (the president) prefers to provide medical references over the phone as opposed to the board so she can match you/mom up with the person most appropriate for you --which would require knowing more about you than you would probably want to post on the board. You can also get on the mailing list for the newsletter.
In the meantime, you and all your siblings need to get screened too, since HCM is genetic.
Please read the rest of this web site and as much of the message board as you can as it is full of info. I highly recommend getting the HCMA's Patient's Guide to HCM as well as it answers a lot of questions.
The beginning of this process can be scary because there are some very bad cases of HCM out there, but I'd like to emphasize to you that the vast majority of HCM patients live a full life expectancy and only have to make minor lifestyle adjustments. THere are more advanced cases on the board sometimes because those are the ones who tend to have the most questions.
I can tell you though, off the top of my head, I don't think there are any "foremost experts" in Detroit. There are two preeminent centers in MN --The Minneapolis Heart Center and the Mayo Clinic and I think that is the closest you will find. Lisa can help you decide which would be best for you and your family.
take care and keep us posted,
Sarah
