    [Good News]

    Author: Jerry Salzman (---.treas.gov)

I had another pre-syncope, well not really, I just almost fainted. My HMO has approved my surgery at Cleveland. YEA!!!!

Lisa, I would have bet against my chances. I think it just goes to show that some companies have a heart and it is not just bottom line all the time.

They didn't include tests, so I still need to know that, but I will be having the surgery on the 27th. Now it's time to be scarred!

By the way, for those myectomy out of town vets, how do they handle follow-up?

    Thanks

    Jerry

    Dear Jerry,

    Congratulations!!!!

We look forward to hearing the good news when you come back and are recovering very well, thank you very much.

As for follow ups, you should talk to your doctor directly about this as everyone is different and has different needs.

I do know that there are probably some very important follow ups that you will need to have at Cleveland, but some people coordinate their care so that they see a local doctor who then follows whatever direction the specialist advises.

Good luck and hang in there

    Sarah

    Jerry!

This is wonderful news!!! We will see you in Cleveland next week then! BTW - I'm with you on feeling the 'nerves' this week. The week is going to go very quickly which is good in some aspects and overwhelming in others!

    Dear Jessica,

A myectomy is an open heart surgery where they cut away the heart muscle on the septum that is blocking the mitral valve from opening and closing properly. Only an HCM specialist can properly determine if a myectomy will help you. Only people with obstructive (HOCM) HCM qualify and not always then --just depends on how your hypertrophy is and how thick.

Are you seeing an HCM specialist? What is your diagnosis and what kind of device do you have?

    Sarah

    Hey Jerry,

I have been following your threads on this board and am glad you're getting to Cleveland for a myectomy. I had mine last July (2001). I live four hours away and most of the follow-up visits were done through my local cardiologist in connection with Dr. Lever. I did go up to Cleveland for the 8-week check-up, and I am headed up there again for the one year check-up. I have a rather wise and open minded local cardiologist so this has worked well for me! Good luck to you...
