I have read posts saying if you are a pregnant heart patient that you should not have an epidural. Is there a difference between an epidural and a spinal block? Do they have the same effect?

Dear Judith
Please visit http://www.hon.ch/Dossier/MotherChil...ainrelief.html for a great explanation of the different methods of pain management for labor.
The epidural and spinal block are similar but performed in different parts of the back. From a medical standpoint, it is the drop in blood pressure that you need to avoid and I think the procedures may be similar enough for great care to be taken. Please talk to your doctors about how to handle your pain during labor.
good luck
Sarah
