[Local Doc vs HCM Specialist]

I know Lisa and Sarah always preach to see a HCM Specialist, well I am going to SCREAM and YELL!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought I was going to a great hospital with experts. The hospital made the US News & World Report top 50 in the US for a heart program. It is a high volumne large (44 Cardiologists) practice. They do both ablations and myectomies. If it wasn't for this site, I never would have thought of going to the Cleveland Clinic for a second opinion. I mean driving 6 hours each way in 1 day was NOT fun.

If you read my previous post you will see that the local docs missed something. I could of ended up with an ablation that might not have solved the problem. There were other differences as well. I thought the technology at the local hospital was good, after all they got a 4.5 out of 5 for equipment in the magazine article. The echo machine at the Cleveland Clinic was better. The resolution and ability both were superior, but that was not what impressed me. This was my 12th or so echo. The technician was 10 times more experienced and knowledgable than anyone else that has ever done it. Her ability to do the test and knowledge was simply amazing. I had expected the doctors to be more experienced, but it goes down right through the entire program.

Well it sounds like your apointment went well.

But you did not say what treatment path you are now on? It sounds like ablation is out, I will assume myectomy also... what about meds??

Let us know and your are welcome to jump back on the soap box at any time.

Best wishes,

Dear Jerry

THank you for your two, ---no make that 25 cents-- worth here.

It is very hard to explain to someone who has never, ever had top flight medical care what a huge difference it makes. However, I do want to mention that Cleveland Clinic is not the only fabulous, incredible HCM center there is and LIsa makes a big effort to match people who come to us for referrals to doctors and centers that will meet their needs best. So let us help you and talk to Lisa about doctors. Lisa can also help you avoid some not-so HCM friendly guys, too.

Jerry, congrats and good luck with everything.

I am being treated at Long Beach Memorial Hospital by two cardiologists - Winifred Waider and John Messenger, who inserted my pacemaker. Is anyone out there familiar with either one of them? I'm very pleased with the way they have taken care of me in the past, both medically and personally as far as involving me and my family in all decisions, but just want to check this out. Thanks.
