[Anaesthetic & Atrial fibralation]

Hi Everyone,
Hope I'm not wearing out my welcome. (2 messages in one day).
Has anyone developed or heard of anyone developing atrial fibrilations after having a general anaesthetic?
My husband, Bill, went into hospital in February to have some work done on his knees. The evening after the procedure he had his first attack of atrial fibrilation and has been having them spasmodically since. He is going to have Pulmonary Vein Isolation in September to try to fix it. They have also told us that he may need to have this done a few times to fix the problem. Has anyone had this done and have you had to have it more than once?
Sonja

Dear Sonja
My biggest concern right now is that your husband (according to previous post) now has sudden death in the family and he needs to be evaluated for an ICD if they have not already done so.
Also, have the doctors tried any of the antiarrhythmia medications on hubby before deciding on surgery? Sotolol, amiodarone and dofetilide are the three I'm thinking of.
I highly recommend calling the office (973-983-7429) to hook hubby up with a specialist if those things haven't been done.
Certain types of arrhythmias respond well to the procedure you mention, but there is some general feeling that the cutting has been getting really popular as opposed to being the best choice for everyone, which is why it is really important to see an HCM specialist and be sure that the other options have been exhausted and/or hubby is a great candidate for the procedure.
take care
Sarah

Dear Sarah
Thankyou for response.
I'm sorry I neglected to say in my earlier email that Bill is to have an ICD fitted a day or two after he has the Pulmonary Vein Isolation in September. He has been on some of the medications that you mentioned, however they did not help the situation.
Thank you for suggesting that we ring the office to find a specialist, however, we live in Sydney Australia. Bill will be undergoing the procedures in one of the best (if not the best) hospitals in Sydney. He was referred to his specialist by his cardiologist and is highly regarded here.
As I mentioned in a previous email we have a six year old son. He had an ultrasound when he was two and were told that he wouldn't need any further tests until he was about ten. After reading your response to my earlier email we have booked him in for an ECG in 2 weeks. Hopefully everything will be clear.
