[How much meds]

Hi all,
In a recent post I ask about having my boys take meds before going to the dentist due to the doctor saying that both have mild HCM and one having a heart murmur. Actually both have a heart murmur, but they can't always be heard. They are called inacent murmur.
Anyway, I did call the dentist and he said he needed to talk to their doctor first. Yesterday he called me back and his answer was that the doctor said he is not even sure they have HCM, yet he told me when I took them to see him that they do have Mild HCM but he is not going to diagnose them because of labeling them and also because of health insurance reasons, and he does not feel that they need pre-medicate. So the dentist said not to pre-medicate. Well I disagree. Like Sarah said before, eithers you have it or you don't and frankly I don't feel like having my child in the hospital for several weeks when he is suppose to be going to school. So my question is anybody that has a child that weights aroung 70 to 75 lbs. how much do you have to medicate them. I have medication and am going to pre-medicate anyway.
Dora

Dear Dora
For legal and ethical reasons, I don't think that it would be a good idea to post that kind of information on the board.
Please call Lisa at 973-983-7429 to talk about this.
take care
Sarah
(personally, it sounds like it is time to buy life insurance for the boys, make sure they are on your health plan and take them asap to a pediatric HCM specialist.)

Hi Dora,
If it's Amoxicillin, the calculation would go like this.....50mg per kg of weight. It is usually the drug of choice unless there's an allergy or something. There are different antibiotics though with different calculations & I'm not certain what the doctor ordered.
But, if your child was to take Amoxicillin one hour prior to the procedure he'd need 1700mg of coverage. When the kids reach about 90 lbs they take the adult dose of 2000mg.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for the information Karen. The boys appointment was this morning at 8:45 and I had not been able to get ahold of Lisa yesterday so I just gave them half the dose that I was told to take which was 2000 so I gave them 1000. I was able to read your post just before I left so I did give them the right amount.

Dora,
PLEASE do not medicate the children yourself. If you disagree with the opinion of a doctor not to medicate, tell them that you are more comfortable premedicating and I am sure they will provide a proper prescription. This or any other message board is not the right place to get this type of information and it can be dangerous.
I would hope you think twice about this in the future and I would greatly appreciate not posting this type of a question in the future, these questions are meant for you health care provider.
Thank you,
Lisa
