    [GET those records!]

    Author: Karla (---.proxy.aol.com)

    Hi, All

Just wanted to share that we recently obtained copies of hubby's records from 2 years ago of his stress test and echocardiogram. At that time, they told us NOTHING was wrong and that his abnormal EKG (which prompted the other 2 tests) was 'normal' for him. Well...when we got the records - there under the 'conclusion' on the report in black and white were the words... hypertrophic cardiomyopathy!! NO ONE ever told us! Don't know what happened there - but somehow that fell through the cracks! (Lisa YOU WERE RIGHT)

Also, when I obtained a copy of hubby's recent echo, it reported a finding of a mass on his liver. Which was ALSO missed by the doctor and we were not told!

(The good news is after 2 CT scans,it was diagnosed as a benign hemangioma)

I had gotten this report late on a Friday afternoon, and I cannot tell you how scary it was to have that info and not be able to take any action until Monday morning!

I won't get on my soapbox here on my opinion and the state of health care...

also, not trying to be an alarmist here- just wanted to share MY experience to make you all aware of the importance of educating ourselves and that doctors are HUMAN and can make mistakes!

    Karla

    Karla,

Thank you for posting...and to the rest of you, this is not typical but does happen.

Karla, after talking I thought we may find more data in those old reports and I am glad that you did find it before something "bad" happened.

I would make a suggestion to all those who have had similar experiences (and I know you know who you are). IF you have not encountered any serious problems due to your healthcare providers errors...BRING THEM TO HIS/HER attention, they are human, they make mistakes, let your mistake - that caused no injury - be the one that reminds them to be more careful. You may help save a life somewhere down the line. Do not expect the doctor to tell you to your face "hey thanks for telling me I messed up!" - but know that when you leave he/she will evaluate your records to see what was missed. Remember they are human and no one likes to make mistakes.

By no means should this posting be viewed a legal advise, simply a suggestion of a way to help improve the medical system in a friendly and non-threatening way.

Karla - my best wishes to you and your family,

    Lisa

    Hi

In my experience, any time a medical professional has said "Oh,_____ is _____, but that is normal," they have been wrong, wrong, wrong. As in, "Oh, your kidney is dilated, but that is normal." Um, no, actually it isn't ---unless you have a kidney stone!!!! As in, this test result is a little off, but that is normal. No, normal is normal. Wrong is wrong. The body doesn't do stuff to amuse itself.

Sorry for ranting, but this problem really frosts me beyond all boundaries. Thanks for sharing your experience and thank goodness everything is still ok (it is, right?)

    Thanks,

    Sarah

    AMEN! Sarah.

I just got that speech today and I am quite upset about it. My specialist said that my symptoms. shortness of breath, chest pains, fatigue, and get this elevated enzyme levels was happening somewhere else other than my heart. Well she said the high enyme levels were normal for me! So now she has me going to a GI doc and getting PFT testing done. I could rant all day but I won't. Just be careful on what your doc says the tests speak for themselves!

    Dear Mary

OH, gee, there are other organs that produce cardiac enzymes? WHat a novel idea (sorry for the heavy duty sarcasm, but Lisa is right --this spot on me is so sore it is raw).I would ask that doctor to show you the blood work for the last ten years of elevated enzyme levels that are "normal" for you.

Good luck and have you talked to an HCM specialist???

    Sarah

    Well Sarah,

I did ask her what she was comparing it to and she said my hospital admits. Well DUH I went into the hospital with chestpain and shortness of breath. The sad part is she is supposed to be the specialist. My regular cardiologist seems a lot better at this point.

But with help from Lisa I am going to talk to my regular cardiologist in the morning and see if I can get a referal from him to Boston. It sure is a long way from the land of the Mouse but if it gets me feeling better than it is worth it.

    Thanks!

    Dear Mary

Yeah, I have to agree with you that the symptoms that drive you to the ER are not exactly "normal" are they? Wow. You could drive a truck through that gap in logic.

good luck with a new one! (anyone Lisa has stamped "approved" rocks, by the way)

    Lisa,

Sarah means that anyone you suggest is an awesome choice!

Unless you really are approving rocks to treat us. Which I believe to have happened to me but not from you guys! You're awesome!

    Dear Lisa

Sorry. If someone "rocks" --they are fabulous. If someone has rocks in their head --well, they are not so fabulous.
