    Dear Robin

Beta-blockers work on one specific chemical agent in the heart and Norpace works with another (potassium). I took a beta-blocker and Norpace for ten years --it is pretty common to take both since they do different things. Beta-blockers soften the heart's contractions, lowers blood pressure and can reduce palpitations. Norpace specifically reduces or prevents arrhythmias.

Norpace needs to be started in the hospital because, like several other anitarrhythmia drugs, it can _rarely_ cause unwanted arrhythmias instead of preventing them. So they keep you in the hospital to make sure you don't have any unpleasantries, or if you do, they reverse them immediately and stop the Norpace.

I think three days in the hospital (2 and a release on 3?) is about standard.

Let us know how it goes. Norpace is great stuff and I never had any problems with it.

    Sarah

That being said, everyone is different and if norpace doesn't work, there are still other medications to try as well.

    take care,

    Sarah

dear robin,i spent 3 days in the hospital when they started me on norpace 6 yrs ago and my doctor said it was just to be on the safe side, norpace can sometimes cause other arrhythmia problems like long qt syndrome so they just monitor you while you start taking it.it's been real good for me,no real side affects other than a dry mouth. good luck, kevin
