    Cynthia,

Claritin will not do much for a stuffy head cold, in fact it could make you more stuffy. Since decongestants are out, why not try an old fashioned remedy? My mother always put about a pea sized amount of Vicks Vaporub in very hot water, put a damp towel over our heads, and made us breathe the warm, moist air with the Vicks in it for about 15-30 minutes at a time. It works wonders, makes biological sense, and is pretty much as harmless a treatment as I can think of, unless someone knows something negative about menthol.

You could try the new form of Claritin. It is called CLARINEX (desloratadine) by Schering & is available only by Rx in the US. It is also marketed O/C in Canada as AERIUS. The dose is one (1) tablet daily. It is also expensive at $1.00 CDN per 5mg tablet.

While it is an antihistamine, it also has an anti-inflammatory action on the nasal membranes that reduces congestion & does not cause drowsiness.
