Burt, and you want to know why we want you around - i love that pee joke - only you could put it together like you usually do - a mixture of serious issues ending with a joke - we all love you and I do wish you and Shirley God's continued blessings and remember He is still in the miracle business so you have a long time here - just trust Him.

Have a great day! And welcome back!

    Re: Where is Burt?

Did I mention that G-d also had a wild sense of humor?

I picked up Shirley from Bridge, and we drove over to Sweet Tomatoes Ė a salad bar Ė for an early dinner. I was driving through their parking lot when a Texas girl backed out of her parking space and slammed into my right rear door, the wheel well, and the aluminum wheel rim. The door will probably need to be replaced, I donít know how they will fix the wheel rim as it is dented in and the weld that connects it to the skirt has broken. Iíve got no idea whatís wrong with the right rear wheel, but whenever I make a left turn I hear the tire rubbing against something.

Yet nobody was hurt. The torrential rains had slowed to a drizzle, and we were again dry the minute we stepped into the restaurant. By the time we headed home again, the flooding which was over the walkways had all disappeared and the streets were dry, with the sun trying to peek out. The desert is a crazy place.

The insurance companyís hospital doctorís nurse called to ask how I was, and got very upset to learn that I adjust my own medís (never told her that it was generally with the various doctorís permission.) She repeated multiple times that the clown cardiologist was board certified and I should do what he says Ė yeah, right. She got me an appointment with my current cardiologist for Monday, but the appointment was in direct conflict with my Nephrologists appointment. I donít care much for him either, but I am concerned about that load of potassium on my kidneys.

I changed the cardiologistís appointment to Thursday. I should find out about the second diuretic then. I will get the Nephrologists view on how much potassium I should be taking on Monday, and will address it with the cardiologist on Thursday. He will hear all about my displeasure on being told that he will treat me, and then sending in that third string clown. If it EVER happens again Ė Iím outía there. If he canít promise me that I wonít see him again Ė that will happen Thursday. (They have this rotation crap they use to avoid treating their own patients.)

The following Monday I have an appointment with my endocrinologist. Heís great, but I have a couple of questions for him too. In the hospital, before breakfast, my blood sugar reading was 157. They took away my breakfast and liquids Ė I had nothing Ė but before lunch my blood sugar reading had jumped up over a hundred points to 264. I took the insulin and had a diabetic diet lunch, and before dinner my blood sugar level had jumped again to 399. Iím increasing my daily dose of insulin from 155 units to 170 (30, 30, 30 of Humalog & 80 of Vantage), but I donít hold out much hope of an improvement.

My PCP said she had to get better control of my lipids, but when she saw the three medications I was already on for it she said Ė there is nothing else. Iíd hold a raffle on which malady will kill me first, but I wouldnít be there to pay the winner. Sorry.

Geez, I gotta get some rest. Iím falling into a regular downer. Itís like the old man who took Viagra just so he could find it to pee. Who says some things never change? (Sorry Lisa Ė it was all I could think of.) If I could only get this fat slob off my chest Iíd go lay down. See yíall in the funnies.

    Re: Where is Burt?

    OK you guys,
I got a call from G-d today. He said a lot of people have been mentioning me, and he wanted to find out who the heck I was. I told Him it was just a bunch of crazy people who think I may be of some value to somebody or other, and to pay no attention.

Well, as a good will gesture He took away my stomach virus and my calves are healing to the point where I can walk almost normally. How about that? I guess itís true. No good deed goes unpunished Ė youíre stuck with me again.

This week-end I should have all the stuff assembled and faxed to my PCP and insurance caseworker. The request has to come from my PCP, but my caseworker will take it to the top dogs at the insurance company to try and get it approved.

When I tried to get Shirley into the new Epilepsy Clinic at a local Hospital it was initially denied, then the hospital put in another request and it was authorized. I had previously asked the hospital how much it would cost to pay for her care out-of-pocket and was told that she is on Medicare and it would be illegal for her to be an out-of-pocket patient. I have my caseworker looking into this problem, but I believe it stems from the government not wanting doctors to charge extra for the care of Medicare patients, or Medicare HMOís driving people to seek private care out of the plan. We will see what happens with my request.

I am almost to the point of pulling up stakes and moving back to California where we both can get proper care. Nevada is almost as bad as Florida. By the way, I spoke to Mary on the phone. Sheís home from the hospital. She passed out during the discharge processing, but they discharged her anyway. Iím sure sheíll post all about it in a little while.
Gotta run and pick up Shirley Ė see ya.

    Re: Where is Burt?

    Hey,
If all you guys are looking for Burt, would it be OK if I looked too? I think I know where heís at Ė in more ways then one.

Actually I am really bushed. Between this stinking cough, the tight chest, the headaches, etc, and now I think Iíve got a stomach virus, and my calves are still very sore and inhibit my walking. Those cramps really must have done a number on them. Today Iíve been quite busy.

I got a call from my PCP that Iíve been approved for a bilateral arterial Doppler scan of my legs. Last year they were checked when I had my iliac arteries angioplastied and stented, and the doctor advised that the blockages should be monitored closely. I now have an appointment for 8/30.

I was in contact with Lisa and got the name of the specialist in California. I then was in contact a number of times with my insurance high risk caseworker. One was trying to set-up a request for me to be covered by the insurance to see the specialist. I then spent hours building documentation to support it. My caseworker will take the request directly to the top men at the insurance company Ė once my PCP issues the request with documentation Ė which hangs on my getting it together.

The caseworker also contacted (my?) cardio to find out how much of which drugs I should be on. A number of calls to them resulted in no response, so Iím just on the Lasix and potassium I was on before. I donít know the whyís and wherefores of the new prescription Ė the write-up I was given said it was for young children, so Iíll ignore it for now. It was ordered by the primary doctor in the hospital who thought my HCM symptoms were caused by gastroenterological problems and requested that my PCP order a GI series for me.

Then of course I took my Shirley out to the mall for a couple of hours of freedom. (Thank G-d I have the scooter.) Iíll have to finish the documentation tomorrow Ė or, if we go to play bridge, Iíll do it over the week-end. I also have about three hours of bill paying I have to do ASAP, but I just havenít been able to get to it yet.

It was quite disheartening to find on a hospital diet my blood sugar still went to 399, even though Iím taking 155 units of insulin and glyburide pills for it. My lipids are still too high, but after the three drugs Iím already on, thereís nothing else to take for it. My energy is down, my frustration level is up, and Iím sore all over.

Sorry I didnít post sooner, but I just could not come up with a good joke for you. Itís like the little boy in a navy blue suit on a hot day Ė wishing he could take the suit off, but thankful that no one could tell he peeíd himself in it.
    Love to all you guys,
    Burt

    Burt,
Still pulling for you! I am so sorry you have had such a bad time w/your doc's and the hospital.

I have learned w/too much experience (with others in the hospital, not me) that you have to be an advocate for yourself, or have someone else who will be.

I almost lost a nephew a couple of years ago. Too long of a story... involving a brain infection, surgery to remove that, resultant swelling of the brain that we noticed symtoms of, pressing the doctors about, and then another surgery to literally save his life. Not to mention too many other situations.

The point? You must, for yourself, and all who care about you, including us, take control of your care, and make the medical community do what is right for you. Not trying to be preachy, and sorry if I am. You probably know all of this, but I just want to remind you.

Burt, please take care and let us know how you are.

    Burt
I have to agree...Please call Lisa and see a specialist! You really don't want a quack playing with your life...now do you?? Basically, if I understand correctly, you could diagnosis and prescribe medications better than the doctors you have been going to. Think of this, your wife needs you as much as you need her, your children need you, and we need you. So please get your butt to someone that is qualified.

Burt, glad you are home, but it sounds like you should still be in the hospital. You do tend to get more rest at home.

I think it would be good for you to see the HCM Doc. that Lisa is talking about. Please take care and let us know what you end up doing.

    Hi Burt,

Glad to see you back and posting!

You are always one of the first to tell the newbies how important it is to be treated by an HCM specialist, aren't you? Now how about taking some of your own advice? For the love of God, man... just do it.
