I got my handicap sticker last Friday. It was real easy. I stopped at the DMV and picked up the application on my way to my PCP appointment. He signed it and gave me a perscription for it (needed in Ohio). I stopped at the DMV on the way home. They are $3.50 in Ohio. You can buy 2 for $7.00. The day took me an hour and one half. Piece of cake.

In Ohio, they would only give it for 5 years. But I will only use it when I need it. On those bad days. Good luck...

      Hey Guys,
Read the literature that comes with the placard, or ask the DMV for a copy of the rules and regulations. In many states it automatically waives parking time limits and allows you to park in metered spots for free. If you’re in a state that charges for the placard, it gives you a chance to recoup the costs to be ‘officially’ disabled.

HCM affects the heart, not the brain. If you are officially disabled, you are fully entitled to any perks that apply. By the way, you can get handicapped placards even if you do not drive. (You still have to go from the car to the stores, etc.)

Most people start off feeling guilty because they are handicapped and have a disabled parking placard, - and only use it when they absolutely must. However, after a while they usually get tired of abusing themselves unnecessarily, and use the placard as a matter of course. Hey, we didn’t volunteer for this disability, and would much rather not have it, but since we do, why not take advantage of the state offered considerations?

        P. S.
The handicapped placard does NOT waive such things as alternate side of the street parking, and ‘no parking’ zones. It does work on 15 minute parking zones, one hour parking zones, and restrictions of that nature - - IF your state permits it.

          Hi Shirley
What kind of diuretic are you taking? I am now on 3 different kind and taking one twice a day. I recently was increased to 3 when I was hospitalized last month. Three years ago I was only on one diuretic, once a day. What a change! I am afraid at one point in time the amount of diuretics that I am on now will ruin my kidneys. I also wear support stockings (knee high) that I was measured for while in the hospital. I must wear these for the rest of my life. What a change since I was diagnosed in the 70's.
Take care and keep us informed.

How did you visit go? I know it can be a real "tuffy" getting those fluid levels under control - I wrestled with it for months, last year, but now I think I have it conquered (for now). I switched from Lasix to Bumex & it made a big difference! In fact, I'm down to just 3 x1/day. Every now & then I take an extra 1 or 2 (with my Cardio saying he trusts my judgement, when necessary).
Let us know how everything went today!

                Shirley,

What do they plan to do about your sleep apnea? It sounds like you need to get a lot of things taken care of, but this one may hold the key to several others.

I guess i will get the C-PAP machine, but i'm sure will be spending the night again for them to adjust me on it, and i hope that is causing the breathing problems
