    [Chicagoland HCMA specialist]

    Author: Lyn (---.proxy.aol.com)

HI My name is Lyn and my 23 year old daughter, Carrie has been diagnosed with HCMA. We have been to see Dr. Maron in Minneapolis and he recommends that Carrie have a Automatic Implantable Defibrillator implanted.

I want her to have the surgery done as soon as possible, in Minneapolis. Carrie is an adult and the decision is hers. She needs to decide where to have it done.

I would appreciate any advice or recommendations regarding a surgeon in the Chicago area.

Thanks for any and all replies.

    Sincerely, Lyn

    Hi Lyn,

You're daughter is lucky because she is not far from one of the best places in the USA. The Mayo clinic is a very good place. I went there when I first found out I had HCM. Unfortunuly that was 7 years ago and they didn't do anything except do a couple of test and said there wasn't anything that could be done at the time other than medication.

I am now on the east coast and it is hard to find a good doctor out here that know about HCM.

    Hope this helps!

    Dora J

    Dear Lyn,

I live in Oak Park (I've lived in Chicago all my life) and have seen all the electrophysiologists at Northwestern (except maybe one) as well as Dr. Richard Trohman at Rush-Pres. I've also been to the Mayo 4 times and see Dr. Klarich from the HCM clinic there.

My personal feeling is that she should have it done by the Mayo. I've not been impressed with anyone here and the Mayo is not so far, albeit a drag, to get to.

Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

    Take care,

    sarah

I had my AICD implanted by Dr. Petropoulus in Chicago (Christ Hospital - Tinley Park) and he was great! He was my cardiologist until I moved.

I read your posting to the message board and I was a little concerned, if you saw Dr. Maron why would you be going anywhere else to have the ICD implanted? While I agree that the Mayo is a great center, Dr. Maron and the staff at the Minn. Heart Inst. Foundation is/are the best in the country and nearly the world in the field of HCM. I would concider contacting Dr. Maron or his nurse Sue to arrange implanting the device there. If your going to travel to Minnasota why not go to someone who has already studied your heart?

If you want to talk about where to go or what it is like to have an ICD please call, I would love to talk to you.

Hi Sara. My name is Carrie. I had my ICD implanted in July and have had one doctor appointment with a local cardiologist who treated me like I was 80 years old (I'm 23). Anyway, I've moved since my last doctor appt. and I'm looking for a new doctor that I can do my every 3-4 months check-up. I'm living in Palatine now and am looking for a nice person who knows a lot about HCM and who individualizes patient's treatment (my old doctor has not allowed me to exercise or do anything strenuous, which has been really hard for me because before I was diagnosed I worked out all the time and besides the HCM I'm in excellent health). Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thank you!
