[How do I get MD to listen?]

I'm new, so bear with me. Several years ago I noticed a tightness in my chest when I started to run, there was also some physical discomfort mostly between my shoulder blades into my neck and lower jaw. Mentioned these symptoms to MD, he basically ignored my concerns. Now my mother tells me my younger brother has a heart condition where the muscle is too thick, tho she did not know the name of it. She said it was genetic. Haven't been able to talk with my brother yet. I have to start my workout slow, to accomadate the tightness in my chest. It feels like my lungs don't have the elastisity they used to have...I do no smoke. I have a new MD should I voice my concerns? Help how do I get a HMO MD to "sit up and take notice" of this issue? Any suggestions? Thanks for listening. Cyril

    Hi Cyril,

If you have a brother that has a thickened muscle in his heart you must tell your MD. especially if you are having symptons. The first thing that needs to be done is to have a echocardiogram. They will be able to tell if you have a thickened muscle from that. But don't wait, tell your doctor right away and make sure you tell him your brother has the thickened muscle in his heart. Yes it is hereitary so it is not something to take lighty because it can cause "Sudden Death".

I was doing exercise too when I had tightness in my chest and doctor ordered a echocardiogram.

    Hope this helps.

    Dear Cyril,

Dora is correct that you need to be checked out asap. Please talk to your brother as well and find out what he really has. If you have other siblings, they should have echos, too.

If you call the office at 973-983-7429, they will send a packet of info on HCM to your doctor. And give you the names of HCM specialists. Or you can e-mail with the link above.

If your doctor is non-responsive, find another one.

And let u sknow how it goes.

TELL your DR NOW. Explain your symptoms and your brothers diagnosis. YOU should be screened at once. You need and ECG, Echocardiogram and a check-up from a good cardiologist who knows the is looking for HCM.

Best of luck and let us know how you make out.

    Best Wishes,

    Lisa Salberg
