    [Malaysia/Singapore]

    Author: Gerard Choo (---.pacific.net.sg)

    Dear friends,

I was diagnosed with HOCM last December. I am 43 years old. I had gone through the phase of accepting my condition, and I was brought to your homepage. Perhaps, I am very new to all the possible treatment procedures that can avail for HOCM patients. I may need some of your input here. May I know about dietary measures. Vitamins etc. Someone encouraged me to take lots of folic acid, and coenzyme Q-10. Is there a correlation between the physcial symptoms of breathlessness with flatulence/indigestion?

I write too in the hope that there are some over in Singapore/Malaysia who are having a similar condition like mine.

    Thank you.

    Gerard

    Dear Gerard,

I'm glad you found us. If you look back through this message board, you will see discussion threads that mention low-card diets, dehydration, alcohol, and other food matters. I highly recommend reading those threads for some good input on diet.

I've personally never heard of a correlation between shortness of breath and indigestion, etc. However, many people with HCM find that heavy meals make them feel worse (also caffeine, dark chocolate, black tea, coffee, ice cold beverages, diet soda pop, etc.)

Folic acid is good, and potassium and magnesium are very important for the heart. CoQ10 is a popular supplement that supposedly helps the heart but is not approved by the US Federal Drug and Food Administration for that purpose. As long as it doesn't interfere with any heart medications, and you don't overdose, some CoQ10 won't hurt you.

There are too many medications and treatment options to list here, not to mention the fact that not everyone is a candidate for every procedure/device/treatment.

If you have specific questions, please post them here. If you would like to buy the book Dr. Maron and Lisa wrote on HCM, please e-mail [email protected].

    take care

    Sarah
