[Cardiac Rehabilitation]

Hi

Lisa, in the news letter that was sent to me (winter and spring) you have an article about cardiac rehabilitation when you have Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. I just went through rehab and am now going to a monitored gym. My question is about the arm exercise. They have me using a 3 lb. and 4 lb. weight to do lifting from my side and front. They also have me doing 25 lb chest presses and 15.5 arm presses. Am I doing more harm then good or is this ok. I had the article copied and give it to the head people, but so far they haven't said anything.

Thanks,

Dora J.

Dear Dora,

Without knowing your full medical history (and not being a doctor), I can't really say if you are doing too much. My questions would be 1. how do you feel when you exercise and 2, did your doctor prescribe this and is he/she an HCM specialist?

I think you should be aggressive with the people you are dealing with and request a response to your concerns (in a nice way, of course).

Hi Sarah,

Sorry I forgot to mention that I do have Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. I have a lot of symptoms. No my doctor is not a specialist and she told me it was ok to walk but it was never discussed about the weights or presses. I get really tired when I exercise. On the days that I don't do the weights and presses, which I do everyother day, I am not as tired but then again I am not doing as much on those days.

Dear Dora

Regardless of your cardiologist's specialty, she should still know about the weights. It sounds like you know you may be doing too much. Talk to your doctor asap and see what she says and modify accordingly.
