  • Obstruction causing hypertrophy instead of other way around

After half a dozen echos and increasing doses of verapamil, my daughters cardiologist is theorizing that my daughter does not have classic HCM, but rather her mitral valve is physiologically shifted towards the aorta due to a ring of tissue growth at the valve margin. This creates obstructive outflow, increased pressure, mitral regurgitaion etc, and as a result causes the hypertrophy in the septal and free walls of the L ventrical.

He's come to this conclusion based on a reduction in ventricular wall thinkness with verapamil therapy, which would not occur in classic HCM where the ventricular thinkening leads to the obstruction. He's recommending surgery to remove the ring of tissue. I'm setting up some consultations with Dr Maron and Nishimura. Has anyone esle heard of this type of disorder?

There is a possiblity of such a situation. How old is your daughter? Her age and growth may be a factor.
Maron and Nishimura are great places to go for opinions. You are in good hands.
