[could i have this disease? --LONG--]

i was just wondering.... a friend -male- who i'd often felt was my soul mate even during stretches of *years* when we weren't talking, died suddenly, almost two years ago from this disease. he was 21 and seemingly healthy, and died in his sleep. a few months before that i (at age 18) had an occurence of my heart beating at super-speed really hard like it wants to pound out of my chest that lasted about 10 minutes. i was at my college, and they called an ambulance when i told them what i was feeling, but it had stopped by the time the ambulance got there, and they couldn't do anything. it has happened a few times, intermittently since then. the first time i thought it was a panic attack except i wasn't emotionally stressed or disturbed by it. the feeling, when it happens, is accompanied by a mild feeling of "windedness". and has occured once using stimulant drugs (which i do recreationally and VERY infrequently) but mostly while just sitting there or walking around or something. trying to breathe slowly doesn't seem to affect the situation. i have never had high blood pressure (in fact it is often rather low), am 20 years old, and an uncle and grandfather died from heart attack while in 40's. sometimes when i breathe very deeply i get a sharp chest pain like a "punctured lung" feeling but have been told by family that it was probably just a pulled muscle or pinched nerve in rib or chest area. sometimes i get a dull ache feeling inside where my left shoulder meets my chest on the front, but i am left handed so that could just be muscle fatigue. most of my suspicion that i may have the disease though stems from a more "spiritual" or "supernatural" source... i often *know* things through intuition or through dreams that contain things in detail that i will soon live or find out, and i have always felt very connected to this friend who died, and right around the date that he died- either the night of or before or after, he visited me in a dream as a child and said goodbye in a very symbolic and obvious way- two weeks before i learned of his death. and in the dream we were fighting the same "enemy" before the symbolic "ending". and before i even found this site and that the symptoms of the disease are similar to my own, i had a random thought a few times that i might die the same way he did-- inglorious though it may be. nearing my 21st b-day, i need some advice!!

I am sorry to hear that you lost your special friend to HCM. TO know if you have HCM you simply need to have an echocardiogram, ECG, and a check up with a cardiologist. While the symptoms you describe may be symptoms of HCM they can have other causes as well. The fact you lost 2 family members at young ages to heart related problems is rather suspisious, and should be followed up on.

Regarding the recreational drug use, regardless of how infrequent, STOP it. These drugs can cause death to those without HCM, if you suspect you may have HCM you are putting yourself at extreme risk, please STOP.

Death is not glamorous, life is much more fun. Get to a doctor, explain your symptoms, your family history and your fears.

If you need more information contact the HCMA office.

    Dear Tara

As usual, I couldn't put it any better than Lisa did. I'm very sorry for your loss. I have a soul mate myself, and I'll never see him again either. Please heed Lisa's advice and see a cardiologist right away. If you don't know who to see, please call the number in Lisa's post and they can hook you up.

    best wishes,

I am expereiencing alot of the same symptoms myself and i am going to have and echo done soon. I was on the drug phentermine for 3 months and my symptoms only got worse. I experience severe dizziness with any physical activity. Heart palpitations that get worse when i walk up stairs, pick up my daughter,...etc... I have had chest pain so bad to the point i thought might was gonna explode. I was born with a heart murmur and I still have it. I am very sorry for your loss. It is very hard for me to do every day activities because of this. And I have a 10 month old daughter I have to raise. By the way, does cardiomyopathy cause hypotension? If anyone knows, please email me.

    Dear Jenn,

If you are not getting enough water and your heart's circulation is impaired, you could certainly have hypotension. Please call the HCMA office to get the name of an HCM specialist if you need one, and let us know what the echo shows.

There are lots of medications out there that can help you.

    take care,
