  • A cat with HCM????

I took my old cat to the vet yesterday. This new young vet was immediately trying to push me toward all kinds of extra vet services to help my aging cat, which I refused. She then said my cat had a fairly significant heart murmur which could be HCM

Well, she didn't know who she was talking to!

She informed me that I should have all kinds of special tests on my cat and if I didn't comply my cat would possibly suffer "sudden death". I told her that I have HCM and I think think sudden death is a good way to go. She was very aggressively trying to push me toward all kinds of services I didn't want, so later I said that the cat is happy and living an active life mostly out of doors and I had no intention of patientizing her and changing her lifestyle as long as she continued to be able to handle it.

It's obvious the racket this lady was trying to run on me, but I wonder, Do cats have HCM????

Yes, cats can have HCM. Do an internet search on HCM and you'll find lots of references to feline HCM. I found much more on that than I did human HCM until I found this site. Go to www.kartoo.com and type in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. See what comes up. Then scroll over each resource. You'll see a link for feline HCM in each one.

    Husband has HCM.
    3 kids - ages 23, 21, & 19. All presently clear of HCM.

It is very common for cats to have HCM, in fact my first pacemaker was given to a vet to be used in a cat with HCM in the late 1990's.

Life is strange - - but yes you and your cat could have the same condition.

Knowledge is power ... Stay informed!
YOU can make a difference - all you have to do is try!

That was so interesting. I personally love cats. I have 4. My cat Lucky is about 10 and was diagnosed years ago with a heart murmer. Wouldn't that be something if he had HMC? This site always amazes me.
