septal thinning

Can someone please tell me what septal thinning is, I cann't find much on it, how do they know i have septal thinning if it's my first echo, doesn't thinning happen later on in the disease, i asked my neice this and for as long as she has had this, i figured she might know but she didn't, she says i know more than she does, so i guess i need to educate her a little,

you know i would like to know why i can't get a straight answer, to a question, i posted a question to the cleveland medical advisory board, and they didn't tell me anything, i didn't already know, and it wasn't even pertaining to septal thinning on an echo report, i already knew that the septum and LV was thick in this disease, i just wanted to know, how they knew the septum was thinning on a echo, when it's your first echo, and that's exactly how i worded it, i guess it wasn't meant for me to find out, or maybe it's bad news, and no one wants to tell me, i'm a big girl, after all i'm 46 years old, i would rather know the truth than not know whats going on, i guess i'm just impatient, but this disease is scary enough, but not getting any info is even scarier

Shirley, you're saying that on the first echo they said that the septal walls are thinning, with nothing to compare to? That makes no sense to me either. Good luck with your pursuit of answers.

This is what it says, Left Ventriclar diameter is normal, Left ventricular systolic function is hyperdynamic with an ejection fraction of 80%, moderate left ventricular hypertrophy and septal thinning, I'm confused also, just thought someone would know what that is

From the wording you quote I'd say the echo showed your septum is thinner than the "normal" septum. The HCM resources I have only talk about the measurements found in a thickened septum & say nothing about what typical lower limits are on septal measurements--if there are any. Since the septum functions primarily to separate the ventricles & most of the work is done by the outer ventricular wall, this measurement may be considered insignificant. Which would explain why you're having so much difficulty getting answers.

Aren't you seeing a specialist at the end of the month? If so put this question on your list to ask then. Good luck, Pat

I wonder if maybe they actually meant to write septal thickening on the report but it got transcribed as septal thinning instead. That makes a lot more sense given your diagnosis of 'moderate left ventricular hypertrophy'. Septal thickening could be inferred from just one echo when compared with the normal range in adults.

ok IV septum diastole is 1.6cm, LV internal diameter diastole3.7, LV posterior wall diastole1.2, LV internal diameter systole 1.4, that's all i have for you guys, the echo i had in May said the same thing, i just thought i could get some kind of answer, i thought the septum got thick also not thinner

I would suggest speaking with an HCM specialist. In some cases those with HCM can actually "convert" into a a burnt out stage that thins the walls. A specialist can help you find the base of the mater...and give you treatment that will best suit YOU.

I have it written down along with many more questions, i hope you are wrong, but i couldn't find, anything but that {burnt out} stage, for septal thinning, i just hope they worded it wrong, but i will find out on the 30th when i see Dr. gilligan
