Happy to say that I underwent a double bypass 9 days ago, and am recovering at home, now. Spent 2 days in ICU and was discharged 2 days after that, at which time I was up and walking.
Not that I want to say this is an easy procedure to have. It knocks the stuffing out of you.
One thing that surprised me, is that prior to the op, my BP without meds was 160/100. A quarter of metoprolol morning and night was enough to fix it. But now, my BP without meds is 110/70, not bad for a 56 year old male.
The hypertrophic problem I also have, is showing up, I think, in that when I go to lie down, I can feel my pulse shaking my whole torso slightly. However, I am really happy that blocked coronary arteries are now operable.
I'm a writer, so I am writing a care handbook from the patient's point of view, for those who will have to undergo open heart surgery.
I found meditation and hemisync music both useful in the pre and post op stages. The final week of waiting for the procedure can be pretty frightening.
