  • stomach "bloating" feeling

In July, I had what felt like stomach bloating . Felt like if I pushed on it, it was like letting air out of a tire...I know this sounds weird but was wondering if anyone has had this feeling (possibly related to HCM or NOT). I was a little SOB with it but it was during a heat wave and I attributed it to that. I did not have any other symptoms...no fluid build up, etc. Then it went away. Now I've got it again. I dont want to be this hyperchondriac patient but maybe I'll mention it to my doctor

My sister had this and doesn't have HCM. She found that it was worse when she ate certain foods. Corn in particular does this to her. The doctor couldn't find anything wrong with her. Once she cut corn out of her diet she is better. Hope this helps.

    Husband has HCM.
    3 kids - ages 23, 21, & 19. All presently clear of HCM.

      Re: stomach "bloating" feeling

I have HCM in my family (three siblings and my mother) but don't have it myself. However, after having lost 17 percent of my weight and having chronic symptoms of stomach bloating which turned out to be delayed stomach emptying and gastritis (stomach inflammation), as well as other symptoms, I was diagnosed with celiac disease, a genetic, autoimmune disease where by your own immune system's white blood cells, called lymphocytes, attack and damage your intestinal lining when you eat gluten (a protein in wheat, rye, and barley). It is a disease which activates at any time in one's life and can have just one or a number of symptoms, digestive or non-digestive such as bone pain or joint pain. The prevalence of celiac disease is 1 in 133 in people not at risk (Feb. 2003, Archives of Internal Medicine). The only treatment for celiac disease is a lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet due to complications which might occur such as malignancy. I now try to create awareness of celiac disease as a volunteer writer for www.celiac.com. At this site, I've written on the subject of heart-related issues and celiac disease if you do a search of my name at this site.
Doctors such as Dr. Fasano at the Center for Celiac Research in Maryland (www.celiaccenter.org) are now advocating mass screenings for celiac disease since celiac disease in Europe is routinely tested in children in Italy and Italy has has celiac clinics.
You can be screened with blood tests: anti-gliadin, anti-endomysial, and anti-tissue transglutaminase. All three should be performed if possible or the first and one of the second two. Also, if the blood tests are negative, biopsies of the small intestine are performed if suspicion is still high. It is not uncommon for either the blood tests or biopsies to be negative despite a person having the disease.
Other informative sites are www.gluten.net and www.celiac.org.

Laura--Great response re Celiac disease. Among all my other problems, I have celiac disease. I find that when my stomach is acting up from this or from other things, I have more arrhythmias. So, if you're like me, getting to the bottom of the bloating would seem to me to be a very useful thing to do.
