    Quitting Smoking/Blood Pressure

    Hi All,

    I quit smoking yesterday and today my blood pressure has been way up. I've checked it several times throughout the day so i don't believe it is a bad reading. Does anybody know if this is a normal reaction to quitting smoking? My blood pressure has never been this high, so it is a bit unnerving. Also, i am using the patch but since it actually delivers less nicotine than if i were smoking it shouldn't really be a factor, should it?

    Awesome. Go for it. I quit 16 yrs. ago next month myself. I got headaches and I know my bp went up as well but I didn't measure it. You may want to go to the American Lung Association's website and read there to find out for sure.

    Good luck and I hope you don't throw any ashtrays at your significant other or even a boss like I did. Whew my husband still teases me about that. Luckily I was an awful shot.

      Talk to your docs about what to expect, the B/P responce may be from the patch...if your like many with HCM your B/P may run a little low so for once the HCM may be a little helpful?

      Others diagnosed living with HCM (or gene +) include - daughter, niece, nephew, cousin, sister and many many friends!
      Therapy - ICD (implanted 97, 01, 04 and 11, medication
      Currently not obstructed
      Complications - unnecessary pacemaker and stroke (unrelated to each other)

        Thanks for your replies.

        It could be that the blood pressure increase is quite normal for someone who is quitting smoking. I've never monitored my blood pressure during previous attempts at quitting, since i wasn't diagnosed with HCM at the time, and i have no basis for comparison. My blood pressure has always run in the 120/80 range though, even before the beta blockers, so a reading of 148/91 (which i just took before writing this) gives me a bit of a worry. I'll have to ask my doctor on monday.

        Lisa, i never knew that low blood pressure was typical with HCM. Good information to know, and yet another piece to the big puzzle! My blood pressure has always run on the low side, even as a kid. In fact, i used to pass out all the time as a youngster, which seemed to provide lots of entertainment for my siblings and friends! I am one of those people who spasms and twitches wildly when they pass out, so i guess it was pretty funny for everyone to watch. I come from a very small town where, seemingly, cheap entertainment was lacking! When i would awaken, i'd always have quite an audience standing around me laughing

        I didn't think about it before now, but i assume that when doctors ask me if i've ever passed out (they call it syncope?), that they mean as an adult and not as a youngster, right? Is this info that i should make my doctors aware of? I've always answered no to that question, since i have not passed out in the last few years.

          PLEASE TELL THE DOCTORS! Passing out is not "normal" and the spells you had a a child may well be connected to your HCM! Jim this may also be a factor your doctors need to have to evaluate your risk of sudden death. Call them Monday and let them know.

          RE the low B/P it is not all of us with HCM but it is rather common.

            Thanks Lisa,

            I'll let him know. I didn't think it was an issue since it hasn't really happened since high school. My stress test in january was halted when i 'almost' passed out, but i didn't, so there was not much concern about it. Im assuming these are questions my specialist would have asked me if he had done a comprehensive risk assessment?

              Hi, Jim. Your doctor might have asked these questions while you were there, but he might not have thought to ask about past history if you didn't report ever having a problem. I know all too well how things that happened a long time ago seem to slip your memory. There have been several times that I didn't report something that happened a long time ago and I didn't think it would be related only to later say "Wow, that makes sense now!" Hope all is well with you.
