are there big differences in kinds of beta blockers (i.e. atenolol, lopressor, metropolol), or do they all basically perform the same?

Yes, they will basically do the same, but people are not the same, so some find better results with fewer unpleasant side effects with some than others. Tiredness can be a major side effect for some people. Some will find that they are given one beta blocker rather than another simply because that's the one their doctor tries first. It may be the one that doc is more familar with using. It doesn't mean one is better than the other, what you want is the best one to accomplish the job in you with the fewest side effects. It may take a few trials to find the right one. Some are more frequently used in injectable forms (in hospital) and some are used more frequently in pill form for daily use. Linda
