  • Effect of full stomach

    Hi,

I have been diagnosed to have a mild HCM, about 3-4 months ago. The symptoms(could be a short dizziness or as bad 10-15 second of vision black-out and disorientation) gets worst when I have full stomach or anything that causes gas (other factors like Alcohol or coffee makes sense to me but my cardiologists are not able to explain this one). It normally starts with a funny feeling in area below center of chest and quickly turns to one of the above sympathies. The worst case scenario normally happens while climbing up the stairs or getting up after sitting in a deep couch.

I would appreciate if you would share with me your information about this situation.

    best wishes for all

    Re: Effect of full stomach

    Welcome and Hello!

Well, actually, all of that is "normal" for HCM. Many people have problems with heavy meals as they put a lot of stress on the heart. Also, getting up from a sitting position too fast upsets your blood pressure; and stairs can be very hard.

The recommendations are to move from position to position slowly (especially getting out of bed --move to a sitting position and stay there for 30 seconds or so before standing), pausing between flights of stairs to catch your breath --don't push yourself to make all the steps in one try; and eat smaller meals more often.

This should help, as should seeing an HCM specialist. Please call the office at 973-983-7429 to talk to LIsa about referrals.

Sarah is correct on all counts here!
Small meals are best, keeping well hydrated will help and making sure you are on the best meds for you.
A consult with a specialist is very helpful to maximize care.
WELCOME to the board and let us know if you need anything.
