  • Slight set- back

Had a slight set- back on my road to recovery. Had a very small blood clot pass through the heart on Tuesday...didn't know what it was but pain was pretty severe & so went to ER. I just wanted to say thanks to this group for teaching me. Even in a medical setting as terrrific as we have here in Rochester, I was offered nitro (ER people aren't necessarily up on HCM) When I declined they accepted. Was also fortunate enough to have an HCM specialist checking in on me daily in the hospital. My question now has to do with being on blood thinners for the next six months. Has anyone else had this type of problem & did the blood thinners create any unusual problems for their HCM?

    Re: Slight set- back

    Dear Sandy,

Many of us are on blood thinners due to atrial fibrillation, blood clots, etc. Have they determined why you had a clot? This is very important in making sure you don't have any more.

The coumadin doesn't affect your HCM or anything, you just have to make sure you stay at a theraputic level and don't eat too much vitamin K (eat the same amount each week). Vitamin K-rich foods are leafy greens, strawberries, etc. They should have given you a list.

take care and I'm glad you are ok.

Thanks, Sarah. That puts my mind at ease quite a bit. Yes, they said the blood clot probably started while on the operating table & they did anulta sound of the lower extremities to see if they anymore and there weren't. Did not receive any warnings about the vitamin K & I am an avid salad eater so will ask when I go in for the protime(sp) test this morn.

        Dear Sandy,

Keep eating your salads, they will dose you to accomodate. It is just important to eat the same amount all the time ---don't binge and skip--- and then your coumadin dose will be "assuming" the vitamin K you eat.
