Hi I live in SC and have been symtomatic for 5 yrs with HOCM, have had my care managed by my cardiologist here in Columbia but for the last 18 months have also had a-fib episodes that were causing my ICD unit to fire . The EP Dr. has incresed atenolol twice from 50 to 100 to 200 per day and along with 240 per day of verapimil and I am really wrung out however gradiant is down from resting 80 to 10 during val-salvo.Had a cath done,2 weeks ago everything ok with arteries. Cardiologist said heart was now real weak!maybe over medicated took me off a 100 of atenolol and completely off verapimil . Have felt good ,have that extra kick in my step again ,however I have started having syncope again like I did when gradiant was high .I think I need a 2nd opion. Is there someone here in Columbia ,Charleston or Charlotte that is a specialist for HOCM. My father saw Dr. Lever from CC when he was alive but thats a long drive for me . help me if you can Thankyou Rich

Dear Richard,

Dr. Lever is one of the best and certainly worth the trip. I would see if there is someone who could go with you and help you drive, or find a cheap fare and fly.

There are certainly other antiarrhythmic medications to try such as disopyramide phosophate, amiodarone, and dofetilide. It is very important to try and get the afib under control (I speak from experience here).

It also sounds like the ICD could be reprogrammed as well.

If Boston is easier, there are specialists at Tufts-New England Med Center. I don't think there is a major HCM center in your area, but if there is someone Lisa recommends, you can find out by calling our office at 973-983-7429.

take care,

Sarah

Richard,

There is someone at MUSC in Charleston, but I don't know how much of an HCM specialist he is. His name is Dr. Spencer. Please call Lisa like Sarah suggested and see if Dr. Spencer would be a good match for you. I'm originally from Sumter, so I know how far it would be to travel to Cleveland or Boston. Good luck and please give Lisa a call this weekend.

Richard,

in september of this year, my husband had a myectomy done at the CLeveland CLinic with Dr. Harry Lever and Dr. Smedira(the surgeon). They were both excellentand my husband is doing well so far. If at all possible it would be an excellent place for you to go. Rhonda

I went to the Docs at New England Medical Center in Boston. It was definately worth the trip from Florida there! Twice in a month as a matter of fact. It is amazing how much better you feel once you have confidence in what your doctor is saying and doing!

I go to NEMC in Boston and I think its great. Dr. M Maron is great along with the whole team up there. They are currently working on the right meds for me since my first visit in Sept.I think the good thing about it though is Dr. Maron adjusts it right over the phone, so if im not feeling well its not for a long time.

Hi Richard,

I see Dr. Christopher Neilsen @ MUSC. He is doing my Septal Alchohol Ablation this month. He and Dr. Spencer are very good at treating HCM in my opinion as per my personal experiences and treatment. But check with Lisa for more Info. connie
