I would really like to become a cardiologist but I'm not sure what classes to take, I think from what I found out through research that I should have 4 years at an undergraduate school, 4 years medschool, and 3-4 years of residency in internal medicine, then another 3 years shadowing a cardiologist. But I'm not sure. This is what i really want to do, so any help would be appreciated.

Dear Richard,
Call Lisa at 973-983-7429 and ask her if any of our medical advisors could talk to you. The best thing is to talk to a doctor who has already gone through all of it. I'm sure she could hook you up with several.
BUT --You don't have to decide now. You don't even have to decide during college. You can major in anything as long as you take enough bio/chem/etc to qualify for med school. In fact, some people don't even go to medical school till they are older, too. So don't force yourself to decide anything, but prepare for it --which it sounds like you are doing.
take care,
S

Richard, Check with your guidance and career counselors and don't be afraid to quiz lots of sources. Be sure your college credits will transfer to where you ultimately want to end up - get it in writing. I'm not much help on this one, but as the mother of 2 college students, I know you have to actively seek out that college advisor, don't give up easily. They are often teaching their own classes when you are available to see them. Make appts and follow thru. Sounds like you are motivated to do all that and more, good luck! Sarah gave you some good suggestions. Linda

Richard, The world can always use a good cardiologist...and one with an interest in HCM is great by my standards!!!
Speak to your guidance department and they can move you along the way...when your done with your undergrad stuff ...maybe we can get you linked up with some of the HCM docs for some additional training...you never know where your connections will come from.
Best of luck in your education!
Lisa

Richard..one further thought...you must make your brother proud... to know that you are thinking of a lifetime of helping others must make him so happy.
Keep the focus and know we are behind you 100%.
